OVERVIEW:
The LSU Museum of Art’s annual collaborative exhibition with the LSU School of Art featured two of renowned artist Carrie Mae Weems’ photographic and video series, “All the Boys” and “The Usual Suspects,” on display at the LSU Museum of Art April 12, 2018 – October 14, 2018. Through LSU’s Graphic Design Student Office, in partnership with LSU Museum of Art Curator Courtney Taylor, I was tasked with creating a catalogue of the Carrie Mae Weems’ works that had been on display in the exhibition. This exhibition catalogue would accompany the show as it traveled to other locations.
Carrie Mae Weems is a contemporary American artist. She has worked with a multitude of mediums but is best known for her work in the field of photography. “The exhibition focuses on the humanity denied in recent killings of black men, women, and children by police. She directs our attention to the constructed nature of racial identity—specifically, representations that associate black bodies with criminality. Through a formal language of blurred images, color blocks, stated facts, and meditative narration, Weems directs our attention toward the repeated pattern of judicial inaction.”
